Quote

“The best thing for being sad, replied Merlin {the Magician}, beginning to puff and blow, is to learn something. That is the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may miss your only love, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honor trampled in the sewer of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then – to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning - that is the thing for you.”
“The Once and Future King”’ -- T.H.White.

IF THE WORLD WERE A VILLAGE OF 100 PEOPLE

In the world today, more than 6 billion people live.
If this world were shrunk to the size of a village of 100 people, what would it look like?

59 would be Asian
14 would be American (North, Central and South)
14 would be African
12 would be European
1 would be from the South Pacific

50 would be women, 50 would be men
30 would be children, 70 would be adults.
70 would be nonwhite, 30 would be white
90 would be heterosexual, 10 would be homosexual

33 would be Christians
21 would be Moslems
15 would be Hindus
6 would be Buddhists
5 would be Animists
6 would believe in other religions
14 would be without any religion or atheist.

15 would speak Chinese, Mandarin
7 English
6 Hindi
6 Spanish
5 Russian
4 Arabic
3 Bengali
3 Portuguese
The other would speak Indonesian, Japanese,
German, French, or some other language.

In such a village with so many sorts of folks, it would be very important to learn to understand people different from yourself and to accept others as they are. Of the 100 people in this village:

20 are underonurished
1 is dying of starvation, while 15 are overweight.
Of the wealth in this village, 6 people own 59% (all of them from the United States), 74 people own 39%, and 20 people share the remaining 2%.
Of the energy of this village, 20 people consume 80%, and 80 people share the remaining 20%.
20 have no clean, safe water to drink.
56 have access to sanitation
15 adults are illiterate.
1 has an university degree.
7 have computers.

In one year, 1 person in the village will die, but in the same year, 2 babies will be born, so that at the year's end the number of villagers will be 101.

If you do not live in fear of death by bombardment, armed attack, landmines, or of rape or kidnapping by armed groups, then you are more fortunate than 20, who do.

If you can speak and act according to your faith and your conscience without harassment, imprisonment, torture or death, then you are more fortunate than 48, who can not.

If you have money in the bank, money in your wallet and spare change somewhere around the house, then you are among the richest 8.

(The statistics were derived from Donella Meadows "State of the Village Report" first published in 1990)

The Thing I Fear Most

"Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better."
~ Samuel Beckett

Failure.  I fear this more than anything.  I have to push myself to try something if I feel like I might not succeed.  I don't want to fail in my Master's Program, in my relationship, in parenting, filmmaking, in teaching, in anything really.  Failure is inevitable but I guess that is what makes it so scary.  I am not really sure which ball I am going to drop at any given time.  I can usually keep 2 or 3 balls juggling at once...but that usually requires dropping the other 2.

I found this great site
http://www.des.emory.edu/mfp/efficacynotgiveup.html that is really inspirational to me when I feel like I am anxious about my juggling skills.  I love reading how other people failed so many times before succeeding.  It is inspiring to know that just because something doesn't work out the first time...that isn't the end of things.  I realize I have learned more from my failures than from my successes.  I hope that I can keep that in mind when tackling my 101 things to do in 1001 days.  Failure is a great teacher.

Thomas Edison's teachers said he was "too stupid to learn anything." He was fired from his first two jobs for being "non-productive." As an inventor, Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at inventing the light bulb. When a reporter asked, "How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?" Edison replied, "I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps."

January 16, 2008 - Superhero

I am most like Jack Jack from the Incredibles bursting into flames without notice.  Sometimes - I am the most calm person and then out of nowhere I get an idea - or formulate a new plan - it hits me and then I am up and running.  I have often been told that I am unexpected.  Jack Jack is unexpected as well.  Everyone thinks he is just a sweet baby...until he turns into flames!  I think it is great to be underestimated...then no one sees you coming...that is a huge advantage!

I think that many people I have met are unexpected and I am learning not to judge others based on my initial perceptions.  I am working to have an open mind.  When you fail to entertain new ideas you become stagnate.  What is the point of living for 100 years if you are the exact same person for the last 70?

I like that the babysitter in Jack Jack attack tries to "contain" the baby.  Many people have tried to contain me in the past and have failed miserably.  It is nice to see that most people are willing to let you be yourself....but for those few who like cookie cutter people...you might want to keep your distance....light flickers often turn into flames.

My Letter to Anyone

Dear Anyone,

Life is Beautiful.  As crazy and hectic as life may be sometimes, I am convinced that life is beautiful.

A teenager told me recently that if she could say anything to the world, she would say "Believe in someone, even if they don't seem worth it.  No one is worthless and sometimes people are just waiting for someone to believe in them."  She said that a stranger on a bus told her that he believed in her and to keep moving forward and that one person has changed her life forever.  She doesn't even know his name!

I believe words are magic.  I believe that our words when used to inspire or praise can change an entire day for someone (and sometimes without knowing it...those words can change their life).  Our words are seeds.

When I speak, I will be much more careful  with my words.   I will plant good ideas, creative thought, praise, love, joy, peace, happiness, and share the lessons that I have learned in my often challenging life to hopefully harvest positive impacts on those around me.  "If I am broken it is because pieces feed the multitude."  Ruth Stull

When I listen - I will really listen - not just hear.  Everyone has a voice that needs to be heard.  Everyone has their story.  Everyone is my teacher.  It is true that people will tell you who they are if you just listen.

I have been listening more lately...and in the midst of utter chaos...I have found the most unexpected result...despite my original conclusions....LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL.

from me!
